PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING

Our practice specializes in Comprehensive Psychological Assessments, offering clarity for those facing challenges. If you’ve struggled with tasks like reading or math, it might not just be a simple setback. Many learning disorders, ADHD, and clinical issues, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. either go un-diagnosed or are improperly diagnosed.

With testing, we collect data and information needed to make formal diagnoses and recommendations. With testing, we get data and information needed to make formal diagnoses and recommendations. The proper diagnosis can result in:

  • Beneficial Therapy
  • Medical Treatment
  • Academic Accommodations
  • Better understanding of yourself

Comprehensive Assessment

Our assessment process takes a comprehensive approach to testing, ranging from cognitive abilities to academic abilities to emotional & behavioral issues. This testing assessment includes all of the following:

  • Clinical Interview – Clients meet with our psychologist to gain a comprehensive understanding of the individual’s background, experiences, and concerns.
  • ADHD/Executive Functioning – This assessment incorporates testing for executive functioning and does a continuous performance test for ADHD, and includes rating forms (from self and others) to help get the most data to make a diagnosis of ADHD and what type of ADHD.
  • Emotional & Behavioral Issues – We include a variety of personality measures and rating forms to help understand what clinical issues might be impacting a person, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc.
  • Cognitive Testing – This testing looks at verbal and non-verbal skill levels, short-term memory and processing speed. Not only does this assessment look for weaknesses and disabilities, but it can look at a person’s strengths, so they know how to utilize them for optimal success.
  • Academic Testing – Academic testing looks at reading, written language, and mathematics.
  • Feedback Session – Clients and the psychologist discuss results and recommendations together. This step helps clients understand data and diagnoses clearly, so they can feel empowered to make decisions and move forward confidently.

Please note we do not offer Autism testing.

Why we do not accept insurance for psychological testing?

At Dr. Willoughby & Associates, we take the quality of care for our clients very seriously. We are a trusted resource to many in the surrounding communities, including numerous private school systems in the Baltimore area. We made the decision to not be dictated by insurance and to stay focused on providing excellent work for our clients. Here are some of the reasons for that decision as well as the benefits to working with us:

Avoid Unnecessary Diagnoses

Reason: Insurance companies require a diagnosis to be submitted with a claim, regardless of whether a diagnosis has been determined. This often leads to a situation where a preliminary or ruled-out diagnosis must be submitted, which then becomes a permanent part of your medical record. Additionally, there are many diagnoses, such as learning disorders, that insurance companies deem medically unnecessary and, thus, do not cover. This limitation hinders our ability to provide quality care using insurance.

Benefit to you: When you privately pay for psychological testing, you avoid having an unnecessary or potentially inaccurate diagnosis on your medical record. You receive a more accurate and personalized understanding of your mental health without the constraints and stigmas of mandatory diagnoses.

Confidentiality & Privacy

Reason: Insurance companies may request private information, including a full psychological testing report, as part of the claim process. Providers are required to submit any requested information, which can mean that a client’s Protected Health Information (PHI) is required to be shared with the insurance company.

Benefit to you: By going out of network, we can safeguard our clients’ privacy and ensure that sensitive information remains confidential. This autonomy allows us to uphold the highest standards of privacy and trust in our client-provider relationships.

Maintains High Quality in Our Reports

Reason: Insurance companies often impose restrictions and guidelines that can compromise the thoroughness and quality of our evaluations. These constraints may limit the depth of our assessments and the comprehensiveness of our reports.

Benefit to you: We have the freedom to dedicate the necessary time and resources to produce detailed and high-quality reports tailored to each client’s unique needs. This independence ensures that our clients receive the most accurate and beneficial insights from their psychological evaluations.

Avoids Administrative Burden

Reason: Dealing with insurance companies means dealing with a lot of paperwork, waiting a long time for approval, and often getting told “no.” This can take up a lot of time and energy that could be spent focusing on helping clients directly. It can also be really confusing and frustrating for clients because they have to keep meeting certain requirements and jumping through hoops just to get coverage.

Benefit to you: By going out of network, we can reduce the administrative burden on our practice. This allows us to focus more on providing exceptional service and personalized attention to our clients, rather than navigating the complexities and delays associated with insurance claims and authorizations.

Ensures Personalized Care

Reason: Insurance-driven care often adopts a one-size-fits-all approach, which means that everyone receives the same psychological testing regardless of their individual needs. Many insurance companies impose strict requirements on how testing is conducted, which tests are used, and how long the assessment process is allowed to take. This can limit our ability to conduct comprehensive testing that would provide diagnostic clarity for our clients.

Benefit to you: We believe that each client is unique and deserves personalized psychological testing from experienced professionals. Without insurance dictating our approach, we have the freedom to tailor our services to meet the specific needs and goals of each client.
