Good Faith Estimate

Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, healthcare providers and facilities must furnish individuals not enrolled in a plan or Federal healthcare program, or not intending to file a claim with their plan, with a good faith estimate of anticipated charges for services, both verbally and in writing, upon request or when scheduling care.

According to the law, healthcare providers must provide uninsured or self-paying patients with an estimated cost for medical services and items.

Patients have the entitlement to receive a written Good Faith Estimate for the anticipated total expenses of any non-urgent services or items.

Ensure that your healthcare provider furnishes you with a written Good Faith Estimate at least one business day prior to your appointment. You can also request an estimate before scheduling any service from your chosen provider.

In the event that your final bill exceeds the Good Faith Estimate by at least $400, you have the right to contest the bill.

Remember to retain a copy or capture an image of your Good Faith Estimate.

For further inquiries or details regarding your entitlement to a Good Faith Estimate, please visit http://www.cms.gov/nosurprises or contact 410-995-8274.
